"Now we have to play Chelsea, that is another cook," said Louis Van Gaal to the gathered press.

While British journalists wondered whether the Dutch manager was feeling snacky, Mats was two steps ahead already.

The sporting heroes in today's UK are universal and draw multicultural followers. It is that sort of diversity which Mats brings to the Sports Gazette.

As a Flemish Belgian Mats's mother tongue is Dutch, but he speaks French fluidly and has a good understanding of German.

His long jump into sports journalism consists of three parts: A BA run-up at the University of Leuven in English and Dutch Language and Literature, an MA in Flemish Journalism to push him of the ground, and a two month work placement at the Flemish Sporza Radio to get his first meters of free air.

Today Mats is an MA Sports Journalism student at St. Mary's University Twickenham. He likes to write about football, tennis and road cycling but duly admits that during the summer he enjoyed the Olympics a lot more than the Euros and the Tour.
