Varsity Preview:Hopes are high for netball success

St. Mary's face Brunel during Varsity on Wednesday

With Varsity fast approaching, preparations are in full swing at St. Mary’s Netball Club.

The girls have been upping their training, as the days count down to Wednesday 26th March, which sees St. Mary’s 1sts and 2nds take on arch-rivals Brunel.

Club president Grace Mizon told Sports Gazette how the club’s preparations were going for the biggest day in the University sporting calendar.

“St Mary's Netball club are really looking forward to Varsity this year,” said Grace. “We’ve been training well and ended the season on good form. It’s always a tough match against Brunel but I’m sure we’ll be able to put up a good fight!”

This year Varsity has an added significance for a number of the first team players, as many of them are in their last year at St. Mary’s, so it will be the final time they take to the court in their blue and white dresses.

“A lot of us will be graduating at the end of the year, so we’re really looking forward to getting on court, soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the experience," said Grace.

The players are hoping that home advantage, and a noisy crowd will aid St. Mary’s chances of taking the title. “Varsity is a huge day, for the netball club and for all the sports clubs,” said Grace.

“Hopefully we’ll have a really noisy, packed out crowd supporting us which will boost our confidence-they can be our eighth player on court!”

Grace is confident that following a season that saw them finish 5th out of 6 in the South Eastern Bucs League, St Mary’s 1sts can claim the scalp of Brunel.

“We had some close results in the league this season, and I don’t think that our league position really reflected how we performed. So I’m hopeful that come Wednesday, fingers crossed we’ll get the win!”

St Mary’s 1sts face Brunel 1sts at 2.30pm in the Performance Hall whilst the 2nds play at 12.30pm in the Sports Hall. Follow Sports Gazette for updates throughout the day and for match reports.
