The Beavers struggle to keep pace with Canvey Island
Published: 5 May 2014

Hampton and Richmond’s woes continued thanks to goals from Mike Jones and Harrison Chatting.

This ensured Canvey Island completed league double over the Beavers and condemned them to a third defeat in four Ryman league matches.

The visitors were the better team throughout the match as Hampton and Richmond constantly had to soak up pressure from the play-off hopefuls.

Indeed the early warning signs were there for the home team as Chatting forced a smart one handed save from the Beavers Number two goalkeeper Luke Edgecombe after 12 minutes.

Hampton had to wait till the 21st minute to create their first chance of note through Charlie Moone’s cross finding George Wells who could only blaze it over the top.

The opening goal came on the 38th Minute after a corner kick was only partially cleared by Hampton falling to Mike Jones, who hit a half volley 25 yards out into the corner of the yet leaving the keeper with no chance.

Canvey Island grabbed the decisive second goal 11 minutes after half- time through Chatting after Hampton’s defense were caught out by a terrific through ball allowing Chatting to clip it over the helpless Edgecombe.

Hampton managed a late rally as Belal Aite-Ouakrim strike hit the bar 11 minutes from time however this proved too little to late.

The Beavers went on to enjoy some success towards the end of the season by retaining the Middlesex Senior Cup against Wealdstone.

They would also have the last laugh over Canvey Island finishing two points and a place above them in the league.
